TOWSON, MD — The Kansas City Comets were unable to slow down the Baltimore Blast on Saturday night, falling 11–3 inside TU Arena and remaining winless in seven all-time visits to the venue.
Baltimore struck twice early, capitalizing on a pair of restart opportunities to take control of the match. Jonatas Melo and Juan Pereira linked up twice in the opening quarter — the first coming off a three-line violation, the second on a top-of-the-arc restart — putting KC in a quick 2–0 hole.
After killing off a Baltimore power play, the Comets looked poised to build momentum, but a costly turnover led to a short-handed goal from Jamie Thomas as goalkeeper Julian Rodriguez launched a long throw-in to set up the finish.
Kansas City finally broke through 11:51 into the second quarter when Lesia Thetsane found Christian Anderaos to cut the deficit to 3–1. But Baltimore responded with a relentless surge, scoring twice before halftime and twice more early in the third to stretch the advantage to 7–1.
Dominic Francis pulled one back on a restart midway through the third period, but Baltimore answered with another pair of goals, taking a 9–2 lead into the final frame. The Blast tacked on two more early in the fourth before Stefan Mijatovic scored his first of the season off a Zach Reget restart.
Despite the result, the Comets found silver linings: two restart goals — an area of emphasis after last season — and a perfect 3-for-3 penalty kill. Goalkeeper Phillip Ejimadu recorded seven saves in his first defeat of the season, while Rodriguez finished with 18 saves for Baltimore.
Kansas City drops to 2–1 overall and 1–1 on the road. The Comets close their East Coast trip Sunday with a visit to Utica City FC before returning home on Friday, Dec. 12 for a rivalry matchup against the Milwaukee Wave.
