Türkiye played their first World Cup game since 2002 where they won 3rd place shocking the entire world, and before then, their last appearance was 1954. Australia having more recent World Cup history, reached the Round of 16 in 2022.

The Socceroos tried to set the pace quickly and pushed forward early. However, Türkiye controlled most of the game. They held a 2-1 margin in possession throughout the entire game, and took 4 times as many shots. The saving grace for Australia was that only 25% of Türkiye shots were actually on target, Australia had 50% on target off 8 shot attempts.

Australia opened up the scoring in the 26’ minute with Nestory Irankunda who took on a 2v1 against the defense and somehow found a way to sneak it in the near post.

The 2nd half featured more of the same action from the first half. Türkiye failed to break through and make worthwhile opportunities despite controlling the whole game. Australia also seemed to have problems breaking through and getting into the final third.

In the 75th minute, Connor Metcalfe for Australia took a nice low shot from outside the box which had just enough power and bounce to go into the bottom right corner.

In the end, Australia somehow pulled through 2 sneaky goals, a clean sheet, and 3 valuable points against a promising Türkiye team.
