Saturday, June 27th saw two teams take the field. On one side, Argentina had already locked up first place in Group J, and on the other side, Jordan knew this match would be the last they would play at the 2026 World Cup. Let’s take a look at what happened on the field and see if we got any surprises or if Argentina would keep their good form rolling.
The scoring got started early when Giovani Lo Celso fired a free kick in the back of the net from 23 yards out in the 19th minute. Just 11 minutes later, Lautaro Martinez converted a penalty in the 31st minute to put Argentina up 2-0.
Going into halftime with a scoreline of 2-0, both teams had some adjustments to make for the final 45.
Something must have clicked in the Jordanian locker room as Mousa Al-Tamari pulled one back in the 55th minute with a shot from 10 yards away.
Just as time was running out for a Jordanian comeback, Lionel Messi shut the door in the 80th minute. Like he has done so many times in his career, Messi blasted a free kick from 28 yards out to give the Argentinians a 3-1 lead.
That score would hold as the referee blew the whistle and Argentina can begin preparations for the round of 32, while Jordan’s World Cup dream came to an end.
Let’s take a look at stats and see what they tell us. Argentina controlled this game. Possession favored Argentina 73% to 27% for Jordan. Argentina also had more shots on goal 4-1. There were 20 fouls committed in the game, 13 by Jordan and seven by Argentina.
Argentina will play Cabo Verde in their round of 32 match. The teams will travel to Miami for a 6:00 pm kickoff on Friday, July, 3rd.
