Detroit Metro FC General Manager and Head Coach Alex Lubyansky joined Inside the Game on National Soccer Network to share the vision behind one of the most talked-about models in American amateur soccer — a completely free, merit-based pathway.

In a wide-ranging conversation, Lubyansky broke down why Detroit Metro FC refuses to participate in the traditional pay-to-play system and how the club is intentionally building what he calls a “pure model” centered on earned opportunity.

“We’re Never Charging Anybody”

From the outset, Lubyansky made Detroit Metro’s philosophy clear.

“We have never charged anybody and we will never charge anybody,” he said during the interview. “Pay-to-play is fantastic. We love it. It’s a great model. It’s just not ours.”

Instead of charging club fees, reviewing highlight tapes, or evaluating resumes, Detroit Metro’s approach is simple: show up and perform.

“I am not reviewing a single video. I am not looking at a single resume. I don’t care who your youth coach was,” Lubyansky explained. “All I want you contacting me about is our tryout and you believe in yourself.”

He emphasized that tryouts should be about honest, real-time assessment — not fundraising events or politically influenced selection processes.

“A true tryout should be about a proper assessment of talent in the moment and nothing else,” he said.

Addressing the State of Youth Soccer

During the episode, the conversation turned to the broader landscape of youth soccer in the United States. Lubyansky did not hold back.

“Within soccer, candidly, I think there’s a tremendous amount of dishonesty,” he said. “There’s manipulation. False advertising. It’s rampant.”

He pointed to political favoritism, player poaching, and financial barriers as ongoing issues that prevent deserving players from advancing.

“Is there deception? Yes. Unequivocally,” he added.

That reality, he explained, was a driving force behind the creation of Detroit Metro FC.

“We want to have a completely pure model,” Lubyansky said. “Everything at this club is earned.”

Fully Funded Pathways — With a Different Perspective

On Inside the Game, Lubyansky also discussed fully funded development systems, noting that MLS academies are currently among the only properly funded pathways in the U.S. — and even those have only recently become widespread.

But even when a player shows early professional potential, he believes patience and development matter.

“I know what I would do with my kids,” he said. “‘Son, I love you. I want you to keep going to school. I want you developing under our moral compass until you’re ready.’”

For Lubyansky, creating another option — one that removes financial pressure while prioritizing development — is critical.

“And we want to create that other option,” he said. “So that’s what we’ve done.”

Transparency Through the Tryout Series

The episode also touched on Detroit Metro’s Instagram tryout series, a transparent look at how the club evaluates players. The goal, according to Lubyansky, is not exclusivity — but accountability.

“We’re telling our story responsibly,” he said. “We want it to be copied, bettered, stolen — whatever you want to call it. It’s just flattery to us.”

Detroit Metro competes in the UPSL and openly defines itself as an amateur club — no professional contracts, no hidden structures, just opportunity earned through performance.

“We know exactly what we are and what we are not,” Lubyansky said.

Building With Intention

Though the club has only completed one full UPSL cycle, Lubyansky explained that Detroit Metro FC has been years in the making behind the scenes.

“It’s an organization that is many years in the making and a lot of work was done strategically before we ever launched,” he said.

At its core, the mission remains straightforward:

“Our whole deal is free soccer. We don’t charge anybody.”

For viewers of Inside the Game, the message was clear: Detroit Metro FC is betting that merit — not money — can drive the future of American soccer.
