Portfolio or reviews when hiring a developer
Browsing through website developer profiles and not sure whether to trust a good portfolio or rely more on client reviews, because some portfolios look great but I have no way of knowing if those projects were actually done by the person selling the service, and reviews can be faked so easily these days that I am not sure what to believe anymore, so I am curious how other business owners here actually decide who to hire when both the portfolio and the reviews seem promising but you still have doubts about whether the person can deliver what you need.

Hopping on a quick video call and asking them to share their screen and explain their process for a specific project showed me whether they actually knew what they were talking about. Asking for references and actually calling them also helped. Most people skip that step but it tells you a lot.
