MILWAUKEE – St. Croix Legacy went the distance Wednesday.

Oh, did they ever.

After two long weather delays, 90 minutes plus stoppage time of regulation, and a lengthy six-round shootout, St. Croix prevailed 3-2 over WPSL fourth-ranked and previously-unbeaten FC Milwaukee Torrent in the North Lakes Conference finals to advance to the Round of 16 of the WPSL national tournament.

Due to the long rain delays, both teams’ coaching staffs and general managers opted with game officials and WPSL officials to go straight to penalty kicks to decide the winner with St. Croix Legacy posting a 6-5 on penalties to gain the victory in the end at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.

St. Croix also had to come back from a 2-0 deficit after the game was only 26 minutes old.

Layla Kelbel put Milwaukee Torrent (8-1-2) up 1-0 with a goal in the 21st minute, her fourth goal of the season. Ashlynn Skinner-Barrett pushed the lead up to 2-0 with a goal in the 26th minute.

Even facing a 2-0 deficit and playing an undefeated team that was ranked fourth in the nation and came into the match with a 32-6 scoring edge and four shutouts to go along with the Lake Michigan Division title – none of that deterred St. Croix’s upset plans.

St. Croix Legacy pulled one back in the 32nd minute when Amara Smith netted her sixth goal of the campaign. That goal helped the Legacy trail by only a goal at the half, 2-1.

In the second half, Land of the Lakes Division champs St. Croix (7-1-1) gained the equalizer from an unlikely source, as Wren Van De Walker tied the game in the 67th minute with her first goal of the season.

In the shootout, Catherine Fredkove, Savanna Stockness, Bella Meier, Stella Nelson, Briana Henaman and Emily Hinze converted their penalties with Hinze becoming the clincher. After Milwaukee’s Cate Downs’ shot rang off the crossbar, Hinze calmly drilled her shot from the spot to seal the deal for St. Croix.

With the win, La Croix Legacy advances to the Central Region Playoffs in Oklahoma City July 12-13, where they will face Union KC.
